"On Rosh Hashanah it is inscribed, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed:
how many shall pass on, and how many shall be born; who shall live, and who shall die; who in his
time, and who before his time; who by fire and who by water; who by sword and who by beast; who by
hunger and who by thirst; who by storm and who by plague; who by choking and who by stoning... Who
shall rest, and who shall wander; who shall be tranquil and who shall be harassed; who shall be at
peace and who shall suffer; who shall become poor, and who shall become rich; who shall fall and
who shall rise..." read more
Some of the special Elul practices are revealed in the Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur sections, now we are at Elul day 21. The psalm L'David Hashem Ori (Psalm 27) is recited at the end of the morning and afternoon prayers; this
special addition is recited throughout the month of Elul and the High Holiday season, until
Hoshanah Rabbah (Tishrei 21) -- a total of 50 days. And although the daily shofar sounding of
Elul officially begins on the 2nd Rosh Chodesh, it is customary to practice sounding the shofar
(ram's horn) on the 1st Rosh Chodesh, introducing the Elul atmosphere of soul-searching and
repentance.
